Bali Colonial Era

In control of most of Indonesia from 1700 the Dutch only took control of Bali in 1911. Weakened by WW I they found it hard to maintain control. Nationalism grew with a national language Bahasa being declared in 1928. WWII brought the Japanese who replaced the Dutch in 1942. In 1945 the Dutch sought to regain control after Sukarno the first President the son of a Balinese mother declared independence a fact recognised by the Dutch 1949. Using the sites of key events this tour takes you through the impact of the Dutch on Bali. It examines why when the island was colonized the Dutch made a concerted effort made to preserve the island's mystical culture.
