The old Dutch capital and a busy trading centre during the Colonial days with many colonial buildings still standing in the center of the town. The Gedung Kirtya, Singaraja's unique lontar library is the only library in the world with a large collection of lontar manuscripts. The building also houses books from the Dutch colonial era and some very interesting inscribed copper plates called prasasti. The library contains over a thousand texts on the sciences from philosophy to astrology and medicine. The Royal Palace of Singaraja, Puri Agung Buleleng, built by Ki Gusti Anglurah Pandji Sakti which became the beginning of the Kingdom of Buleleng and Singaraja, the capital town of the regency of Buleleng was destroyed when the Dutch captured Bali. The Royal Palace was later rebuilt by Anak Agung Putu Dilantik, the son of the exciled king together with the Dutch. In Central Singaraja is the traditional morning market Pasar Anyar, offers visitors a peek into the hectic local market with hundreds of stalls, selling vegetables, fruits, meat, spices, flowers for offerings, Balinese cakes, clothes, chinaware, household products, and so on. |
