Performance Details The Kecak Dance

Kecak is a dance originated from the Vilage of Bona in the 1930s, which is still performed regularly.

The theme of the dance is based on the Hindu epic Ramayana: The Indian Prince Rama with the help of an army of monkeys who to rescued his wife Seetha from the evil King Rawana, a king of Lanka.

Unlike other forms of Balinese dances, Kecak dance has no musical accompaniment. The rhythm of the dance is produced by the chanting 'monkey' chorus by a troop of over 150 men who wave their arms to simulate fire, reposition themselves to represent wind and fire, prison cells, and as the protection from the gods.

The chanting of the performers “Cak-cak-cak” has given the name Kecak” to the Kecak Dance..
