Destination Details Alas Kedetan

Alas Kedaton is a small forest located in the middle of a rice field in the west of Bali where you can see hundreds of monkeys in their natural habitat.

The monkeys in Alas Kedetan are tame and friendly compared to monkeys elsewhere in Bali. They come out as soon as they see the visitors to the Alas Kedetan temple. Visitors are allowed to feed them with peanuts or fruits which can be bought from shops nearby. Myths and superstitions play a part among the Balinese to protect nature and animal habitats.

For Alas Kedetan the myth is about the monkeys... it is believed that the monkeys in Alas Kedetan are protected by a spirit that keep them safe from people by harming them if they try to harm the monkeys. The villagers believe the monkeys in this forest are special for yet another reason – these monkeys bury their dead. The farmers around the area say they have not found a single dead body of a monkey for hundreds of years for this reason.
